Introduction:

The Ecological Trail Garden of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants and South China Medicinal Plants Garden are located in Seac Pai Van Park in Coloane and are endowed with abundant natural water resources. The adjoining Alto de Coloane also has the widest biodiversity spectrum in Macao. Aside from preserving the features of the original habitats and native vegetation, a broad variety of medicinal plants have been introduced to provide food and shelter for native animals and insects. It is an important area for the protection of Macao’s natural ecosystems and conservation of its fluvial ecosystems.

The Ecological Trail Garden of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants and South China Medicinal Plants Garden have a total area of approximately 30,000m2, and the medicinal plants inside are grouped into eight display areas, each of which is dedicated to a specific habitat and ecosystem, such as wetland, rocky ground, hilly landscape and bamboo grove. These terrains of varying elevations are covered by evenly distributed vegetation. Visitors can walk through the naturally canopied footpaths at a leisurely pace and enjoy the view from heights.

The Ecological Trail Garden of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants and South China Medicinal Plants Garden are home to over three hundred species of medicinal plants, covering native species such as Ivy Tree (Schefflera heptaphylla), Chinese Chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum indicum), Hairy Fig (Ficus hirta), Sweet Osmanthus (Osmanthus fragrans) and Hilo Holly (Ardisia crenata), as well as unique species introduced from Guangxi Botanical Garden of Medicinal Plants, like Fiveleaf Gynostemma (Gynostemma pentaphyllum) and Hairyvein Agrimonia (Agrimonia pilosa). Visitors may take a close look at the shapes and forms of the various medicinal plants and learn about their medicinal properties and toxicities through reading the plant description signs. Some of the plants exhibit a pleasant appearance and produce brightly coloured and beautiful flowers, while some others have peculiar features and pervasive aroma. But each of them has its specific therapeutic effects and health benefits.
