The importance of Vitória Garden lies in its historical significance. Its name was firstly “Campo dos Arrependidos” (“Repentance Ground”), and was soon changed to “Campo da Vitória” (“Victory Ground”) and “Praça da Vitória” (“Victory Square”). According to historical records, local residents joined hands with a limited number of army officers stationed in Macao and won a complete victory over the invading Dutch soldiers on 24 June 1622, hence the name of the garden to commemorate the victory of the war.
Vitória Garden was built from the restructuring of “Victory Square”. The round square, 58 metre in diameter, was located in the north of Avenida Vasco da Gama in the past, the middle section of which bypassed the square.
